Turkey Run 2018 took third grade students back to a simpler time. Students traveled to the Colonial period—1771 to be precise. Without technology, students pitched tents in the woods, helped prepare meals, watched cooking over a fire, and washed their hands in buckets. Some went on hikes in the woods and saw wildlife up close and personal. (They loved the snakes!) Students participated in several crafting activities, including knitting, calligraphy, basketmaking, corn husk dolls, rope making, and tin punch lanterns. They even used “the necessaries,” a squatty potty, in lieu of the restrooms.
Despite plenty of rain, Turkey Run 2018 was a successful learning time thanks to the hard work and planning of GDS's third grade teachers and numerous parent and staff volunteers. Their combined flexibility helped the event to go smoothly. The first day of activities were held at Claude Moore Park. The event then moved to the LMS campus for a sleepover away from the elements.
