The HS Visual Arts faculty foster an appreciation and celebration of the diverse gifts which each individual and culture bring. We aim to instill in our students a life-long love of the visual arts through a broad curriculum designed for all levels. We create an environment where students develop technical expertise, personal voice, critical thinking skills, and innovative ideas. Finally, we expose students to multicultural, contemporary, and historic art movements to help them understand the larger context and contribution of art in society.
Our Program
The Visual Arts program at GDS is considered one of the premier art departments in the region. Our comprehensive curriculum, outstanding facilities, and skilled faculty combine to create an environment where students flourish. Our five state-of-the-art studios are individually designed for specific media, including ceramics/sculpture, painting/drawing, photography, graphic design, and film/video. Students are exposed to the latest technology in our digital Mac labs that feature professional production software as Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, Illustrator, InDesign, and Final Cut Pro.
The curriculum trajectory begins with introductory courses, leads to advanced study, and culminates in a range of AP Studio Art electives. We provide students opportunities to compete in regional, national, and international competitions. GDS art students consistently rank in the top 5% of the AP exam scores internationally, 95% of our student entrants regularly win Scholastic Art Regional awards, and GDS is always represented in annual national art awards. Once a year, the art department hosts an extensive exhibition of every student’s artwork, which allows students to learn how to exhibit, market, and sell their work.
