Music at GDS
Music is an important part of every child’s life at GDS. We seek to create a foundation for a lifelong love of music and to foster active audiences, accomplished performers, and musically literate students.
Lower and Middle School
In classes, assemblies, and informal get-togethers, children experience the joy and beauty of musical expression. Students experience the different elements of music through movement, singing, and playing instruments, gaining the foundation necessary for an intellectual understanding of music. The music faculty uses several instructional techniques including Orff and Kodaly. Age-appropriate technology, including Sibelius and PowerPoint, are incorporated throughout the various curricula.
High School
The music program at the High School provides opportunities for novice musicians to the accomplished. From beginning chorale to AP music theory, from jazz ensemble to musical theater, the music curriculum and the extra-curricular music programs offer students a wide range of vocal and instrumental training. Georgetown Day School is a coed, preK-12, non-sectarian private school in Washington, DC with small class sizes and a diverse school community.
