Just Take A Look, It’s in a Book!

Book Week descends upon the LMS
The Hopper Awards and the Book Fair made for an incredible week of celebrating reading at the LMS.

On Monday night, a packed house attended the 3rd Annual Hopper Awards. Two years ago, GDS 5th graders launched these book awards after noting that the American Library Awards are chosen by adults—not the intended audience.

This year, the class of 2025 nominated books in the categories of Picture Books Featuring Female Main Characters, Fiction that Makes us LOL, and Non-Fiction Sports. Then any student who read all of the nominations in a particular category could vote on their selection.

The night of the awards, 5th grade students hosted a wonderful soiree, complete with eloquent nominations (descriptions of the books and why fans loved them), suspense, and jokes (think a friendly version of a Hollywood awards ceremony). Thank you to our wonderful library team and 5th graders for making reading come alive in such a fun way!

And the Hopper Awards go to…
  • Category: Picture Books Featuring Female Main Characters: Violet the Pilot by Steve Breen
  • Category: Fiction that Makes us LOL: Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made by Stephan Pastis
  • Category: Non-Fiction Sports: For Soccer Crazy Girls Only by Erin Downing
The winning books were available to purchase at the PSA Book Fair, which posted a banner year. Stay tuned for a report out from the Book Fair committee next week.
