Model UN Team Ends Their Year With A Bang

GDS delegates take home 28 awards!
GDS Model UN ended a fantastic season of competition at their final conference on March 3, 2018 at the Sidwell Friends School Model United Nations Conference XI (SFSMUNC XI). GDS sent a total of 34 student delegates. Delegates in attendance attended one of five committees, including:
  • Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM)
    Topic: Capital Punishment and LGBT Rights
  • Special Political and Decolonization Committee(SPECPOL)
    Topic: Manus Island and Syria
  • The Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC)
    Topic: North Korea and Weaponization of Space
  • Specialized Agency IAEA
    Topic: Iran Deal
  • Crisis Committee
    Topic: War of 1812
The 2017-18 team was led by GDS Model UN faculty sponsors Marjoire Brimley and Abraham Pachikara. Abe said, “GDS crushed it at the conference, and they closed out (their season) with a roar!” Twenty-eight student delegates received awards after the full day of competition.

Model UN club heads, Jack Rudnick ’18, Isabel Kirsch ’18, and Levi Freedman ’18 served as student leadership for this year of competition. “[Our Seniors] have done a PHENOMENAL JOB leading this team this entire year, and Marjorie and I could not be prouder for what they all have done,” said Abe.
