Women's XC Makes GDS History
Varsity Team Wins ISL Championship
On October 31, Georgetown Day School participated in a cross-country meet consisting of five races.
That day GDS made history as the women's varsity cross-country team won the Independent School League XC Championships. This is the first ever ISL XC Championship banner and the first ever upper division banner? for GDS women's cross-country?. For the past two years, the women’s team has placed second in the fall cross-country and spring track championships.
A number of students finished in the top ten. Katherine Treanor ’16 finished in fourth, Abigail Doroshow ’16 in fifth, A'ishah Bakayoko ’16 in sixth, and May Robison ’17 in tenth.
The team’s top five female runners averaged the fastest times in league history for any school's top five. No team in league history has ever been this fast.
In the ISL Varsity "B" Race, GDS had a perfect score of 15 points and finished in first, sweeping the first six places and nine of the top thirteen places. Gillian Page ’16 finished in first, Sarah Zargham ’17 in second, Maddi Salwen ’19 in third, Ana Gunther ’19 in fourth, Isabel Kirsch ’18 in fifth, and Ilana Zeilinger ’19 in sixth.
Cross-country coach and LS teacher Anthony Belber said, “To be that dominant in a 16-?school league speaks volumes to how hard our runners have trained and prepared themselves this year and how motivated they were to inspire their teammates who were watching and waiting for their various races to start.”
On the men's side in the Middle Atlantic Conference Varsity "B" Race, GDS finished in first place. Frankie Decola ’17 finished in second, Noah Gottdenker ’17 in fourth, Harrison Pratt ’16 in fifth, Sahil Gogtay ’16 in seventh, and Noah Boorstin ’16 in eighth.
In the MAC Freshman/Sophomore Race, GDS finished in second place. Jacob Gaba ’18 finished in first place, Levi Freedman ’18 in sixth, and Alex Wellisch ’19 in tenth.
In the MAC Varsity Race, GDS also finished in second place. Tristan Colaizzi ’16 finished in first place for the second straight year, and he finished the race with the fastest time in the championship league history. Jackson Todd ’17 finished in ninth.
Anthony Belber said, “All 80 runners on the coed team understand that at a championship meet such as this, they are racing for more than themselves. The Hoppers consistently run their best when there are team scores to be calculated and league banners at stake.”
The team of 80 is excited to continue their winning ways at the DC State Championships on November 7 and the DC/MD Private School Championships on November 14.
